Personal Take
So, let me start with a confession: Thanks to the song “APT.”, only I got to know that, Rosé was the main vocalist of Blackpink—yeah, I know, late to the party! But hey, I’ve been completely hooked on her voice ever since,
I couldn’t stop humming APT. and even arranged a short fingerstyle version. I even recorded myself trying to practise the song and posted it on my YouTube! If you haven’t seen it, check out the video below:
Oh, and if you’re into single-melody tabs, I’ve got you covered too. Check out my previous article!
Okay, back to her new song, “toxic till the end.” Honestly, I didn’t even know it dropped until I saw an Instagram post that blew my mind. Someone said, “While most artists avoid relationship scandals, Rosé went ahead and kissed someone in her MV!”
It made me curious, so I went and looked it up! And wow—her voice had me looping the song for hours AGAIN. Now I’m stuck humming both APT. and this one.
IF YOU HAVEN’T HEARD OF THAT, I AM SURE YOU WILL LIKE IT TOO!
Okay, I guess I'm talking a lil too much, so I wrote a short tab of the new song, and hope you enjoy the rest of it!
Vocal Melody
I’ve worked on the first chorus, from the part where she sings “you had me participating” around 1:02, all the way to the end of the 1st chorus. Here are a few things to watch out for:
Speed
The song’s tempo is 84 BPM, but don’t let that fool you!
There are a ton of semiquavers (16th notes). Just look at the second bar—there are seven of them!
Tip: Count slowly at first, without the song.
Irregular Rhythm
Pay attention to the off-beat placements.
In the second bar, the first note doesn’t land on the 1st beat but on the + of 1 (1 + ). The third note falls on the “a” of "2 e + a "—tricky, right?
Bar 5, the hardest part of the song because most notes land on the “e” and “a” beats.
Tip: Familiarize yourself with the melody so you can sing along. It’ll help you lock in the rhythm.
Hammer-On
In bar 3, where she sings “I never wanna see your face,” the word “wanna” has a hammer-on from the 5th to the 7th fret.
It’s challenging because the speed is fast, and the pitch change is subtle.
Tip: Try slowing it down—listen to this part at 0.5x speed and practice along.
Repetitiveness
The repeated phrases make it tricky to memorize.
For example, compare bars two and three—can you spot the difference at first glance?
Tip: Same as the 2nd point, learn the lyrics and get familiar with the song. It’ll make memorizing the phrases so much easier!
Despite the difficult parts, here’s some good news: your left hand stays in one position the entire time! Yup, it’s all between frets 5–8.
Index finger on the 5th fret
Middle on the 6th fret
Ring on the 7th fret
Pinky on the 8th fret
Check out the video I posted to see how my left hand stays in this position throughout.
What do you think of Rosé’s voice? Do you love it as much as I do? If so, this song is a must-learn, especially if you’ve already tackled APT. Enjoy the explanation, the video, and the tab—and happy practicing! See you in the next one!
