🎭 Saddest Anime Songs Countdown: #5 🎭
Hey everyone! Starting today, I’m kicking off a five-part newsletter series where we’ll go through my picks for the top 5 saddest anime songs—one song at a time, from #5 all the way to #1.
If you love emotional anime music, you won’t want to miss this!
So let’s jump right into rank #5—a song that instantly brings back memories for those who have watched Angel Beats! But if you’ve never seen the anime before, don’t worry—I got you!
🎬 Angel Beats! – A Story That Stays With You
Angel Beats! came out in 2010, so for some of you, it might not be as well-known. But trust me—this anime left a huge emotional impact on those who watched it.
The story takes place in a mysterious afterlife, where a group of students—each carrying regrets from their past lives—band together to fight against their fate. What starts off as a fun, action-packed school anime slowly turns into something much deeper, filled with friendship, laughter, and heartbreaking goodbyes.
Even if you haven’t watched it, this song alone is enough to make you feel something. And of course, as guitarists, we’re here to play the song, not just feel it! So let’s break down some key points to help you learn it smoothly.
🔥 Things to Watch Out For
Left-Hand Position
Good news! No crazy stretching needed—most of the song stays around 7th to 9th fret.
But watch out for bar 14—there’s a note on 11th fret, so you’ll need to stretch your pinky a little to reach it.
Counting & Rhythm
At first glance, the rhythm looks simple—just crotchets and quavers (quarter and eighth notes). But don’t be fooled!
The tempo is 145 BPM, so things can feel a little fast.
Tricky part #1: In the first two bars, beat 3 (bar 1) and beat 1 (bar 2) are skipped, making the timing harder to follow.
Tricky part #2: In bars 4-6, the B note lasts for 7 beats, starting from the + beat of the 4th beat. Keeping track of this can be tough!
Pro tip: Always count internally or tap your foot to stay locked into the rhythm.
Sliding
There’s only one slide in the entire arrangement, so it’s the perfect chance to practice if you’re new to sliding!
Check out bar 20, where you slide from 9th fret (4th string) to 11th fret.
Here’s what to do:
Pick the 9th fret on beat 3.
Pick the 9th fret again on beat 4, and immediately slide to 11th fret to create that smooth sliding sound.
Listen to the example, then try it yourself!
This song is a classic for anime fans, and even if you haven’t seen Angel Beats!, it’s a must-learn if you love emotional music.
