Personal Take
Most of us have probably come across “Until I Found You” by now. It’s been all over social media, especially on TikTok, where its dreamy, retro vibe seemed to click with millions of people. Stephen Sanchez dropped this track in 2023, and it quickly took off, thanks to that vintage sound that feels like something from the ’50s or ’60s.
Honestly, when I first heard it, I thought it was an old classic from the ’60s. The melody and instrumentation had that unmistakable old-school charm. After hearing it everywhere, I decided to dive in and do some research on the song. Turns out, “Until I Found You” wasn’t just making waves for no reason—it actually hit Spotify’s Top 50 and even landed on the Billboard Hot 100, which was a huge surprise to me.
When I sat down to arrange it for fingerstyle guitar (click HERE to listen), I realized the artist was only 20 years old when this came out in 2023. Yet, he nailed that timeless sound perfectly!
Vocal Melody
Since this song went so viral, we have to learn it, right?
I’ve created a vocal melody arrangement that includes the first verse and chorus, then jumps straight into the bridge and ending. It’s super beginner-friendly, and here’s why: your left hand stays in the first four frets for the entire song.
The main challenge is the counting. Right from the first bar, you’ll notice the numbers 6 and 8 stacked vertically (in red). This is called 6/8 time, a type of compound time.
Quick tip: In compound time, instead of counting “1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +”, like you would in 4/4 time, you’ll count “1 2 3 4 5 6” for each measure.
Watch out for bars 33 and 57—they get a little tricky. You’ll see two dotted quavers in the second half of the bar.
Here’s how I count them: break it down to “1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 +”, and for the first dotted crotchet (in black), count “1 + 2 + 3 +”. The first dotted quaver (in red) counts as “4 + 5”, and the second one (in green) counts as “+ 6 +”.
It might sound confusing at first, but take it slow. Play the notes while counting them out carefully. Once you’re comfortable, you can speed it up until you match the original tempo of the song!
